Talking about menopause with loved ones: asking for practical support

Choose an available moment

A conversation is often more useful when it takes place outside of a conflict or a rushed day. You can explain that certain sensations have changed and that you are looking for benchmarks. It is not necessary to present an exhaustive list or convince your loved ones that each difficulty is hormonal.

A specific request

Formulate what might help you: less noise at bedtime, a different division of tasks, or an accompaniment to an appointment. Describe the effect on your day rather than using only one medical term. The other person can ask questions, but your experience should not be minimized because it is invisible.

  • Choose a person you feel safe with.
  • Asking for a workable action rather than a perfect understanding.
  • Agree to reconsider if needs change.

An example to adapt to your daily life

You want to explain to a loved one why disturbed nights make certain mornings difficult. Describe a concrete consequence and ask for specific help, for example moving a task. A practical request can be understood without the other knowing all the vocabulary. You can also specify what does not help you, such as repeated advice or jokes. Take stock after a trial and keep the freedom to discuss certain topics only with a professional.

Keep Your Spaces

You may also prefer to talk about certain subjects to a professional. Confidentiality and the choice of details belong to you. The support of relatives completes a care when it is necessary; it does not impose on you a method or the purchase of a solution.

Useful questions for your next exchange

  • What concrete help would make me gain some margin?
  • What details am I ready to share?
  • How can we re-evaluate our organization without reproach?
Benchmarks, to adapt to your situation

This content is informative and does not replace a personalized medical opinion. A new, persistent or worrying symptom deserves a discussion with a health professional.
