Premenopause and perimenopause: understanding the terms

Putting words on the transition without turning every change into a diagnosis.

A vocabulary to be specified

In the conversation, "premenopause" often refers to the period when cycles and sensations begin to change. The medical term perimenopause is more precise to talk about the transition. Manifestations vary from person to person and do not amount to hot flashes. An isolated symptom does not establish a hormonal cause.

Telling the situation

Note the changes that really affect your days: rhythm of periods, sleep, mood, warmth or intimate comfort. Add the approximate starting date. This document does not need to be exhaustive; it serves to open a discussion with a professional and avoid forgetting a question during the appointment.

  • Specify the possible use of hormonal contraception.
  • Separate recent changes from old difficulties.
  • Choose the symptom that most bothers everyday life.

An example to adapt to your daily life

You notice less predictable cycles and look for a word to talk about it. Bring approximate dates and explain what changes in your activities. If you use contraception, specify it before comparing your situation with that of a friend. You can ask for an explanation of the vocabulary used in the report. Understanding the words is used to better follow the discussion, not to decide alone that all symptoms have the same origin.

The place of vitality

A review can organize comfort habits and goals. It does not replace the medical assessment of the transition or the choice of treatment. Do not leave a general explanation by age to close the conversation on unusual fatigue or new pain.

Useful questions for your next exchange

  • Does contraception alter the benchmarks used?
  • What follow-up is useful in my situation?
Benchmarks, to adapt to your situation

This content is informative and does not replace a personalized medical opinion. A new, persistent or worrying symptom deserves a discussion with a health professional.
