Bone health: starting a conversation after menopause

Think about diet, adapted activity and personal risk assessment.

The bones have their place in the assessment

Bone health combines several dimensions, including nutrition and movement. Menopause is a good time to ask questions about its risk factors, without waiting for pain. A wellness site alone cannot determine whether a bone density examination is necessary.

Preparing your information

Before a consultation, note the old fractures, treatments and relevant history. Also describe what you can do today: walking, exercises or domestic activities. Ask what forms of movement are adapted to your situation, especially if you already have a fragility or limitation.

  • Identify sources of calcium in your usual meals.
  • Have the potential benefit of additionality checked.
  • Ask how to adapt exercises in case of past fracture.

An example to adapt to your daily life

If you have already had a fracture, mention its location and the circumstances before starting any exercises. Also prepare a list of treatments and any old exams. You can ask what activities to keep and what to adapt. In the diet, find the available sources without alone deciding a supplementation. A useful prevention approach connects several information. It is not limited to buying a bone product or to a strength test performed without framing.

Choices to be individualized

The NHS recalls the role of calcium and vitamin D in bone health. This does not justify high doses alone. A nutritional product does not guarantee solid bones or the absence of fracture. Prevention is built with habits and, if necessary, medical care.

Useful questions for your next exchange

  • What are my personal risk factors?
  • Is an examination indicated in my case?
  • What activity is adapted to my potential fragility?
