Reading food labels without reducing food to a number

Compare similar products and keep the place of the whole meal.

Start with use

A product used as a condiment does not occupy the same place as a main meal. Before comparing, ask how much you will use and how often. Nutritional information becomes more useful when the products have a similar use.

Compare quietly

Look at the list of ingredients and the data for the same amount, often 100 grams or 100 millilitres. Also look at the indicated portion: it may differ from your use. The NHS proposes to monitor foods rich in salt, sugar or saturated fats. An attractive packaging does not exempt from this reading.

  • Compare two products of the same category.
  • Check allergens if you have a diagnosed allergy.
  • Choose an option that you enjoy and will actually use.

An example to adapt to your daily life

You compare two sauces. First look at the amount you use in the meal, then compare the information on the same basis. A tiny indicated portion can make reading misleading if you use more. Do not compare a sauce and a complete dish as if they played the same role. Choose an option appreciated and adapted to your constraints. The label is a one-time decision tool; it must not transform the grocery shopping into a calculation test.

One tool among others

The label does not measure your enjoyment or the balance of your entire diet. You can use it for a one-time choice without controlling each bite. In case of medical constraints, ask what information look first rather than follow all the criteria of an automatic ranking.

Useful questions for your next exchange

  • Are the values compared on the same quantity?
  • What portion do I actually use?
  • What criteria are priority in my situation?
