Reading a cosmetic label without getting lost in terminology

Compare useful information instead of judging a formula on a single word.

Know what we're looking for

A list of ingredients is useful when you know a substance to avoid, but it does not allow you to predict your tolerance alone. The presentation "clean", "Botanical" or "premium" is often a commercial discourse. Start with the advertised use, the precautions, the preservation and the identifiable manufacturer.

Compare two products with method

Place the packaging side by side and note their function, the areas allowed and the instructions. If you have a diagnosed allergy, ask a pharmacist how to check the relevant names. A short formula is not necessarily preferable for everyone, nor is a long formula automatically bad.

  • Keep the exact name and reference of the product.
  • Identify usage restrictions before marketing arguments.
  • Check if the formula has changed when a new purchase is made.

An example to adapt to your daily life

A product seems to be suitable, but you have already reacted to a formula from the same brand. Keep both references and ask how to compare the relevant information. The trade name alone is not enough: different formulas may coexist or evolve. If an allergen has been identified to you, please specify its names on the label. A classification application may provide you with information, but it does not necessarily know your diagnosis, treatment or personal tolerance.

A well-prepared question

On the assessment, explain the problem you want to solve rather than ask which ingredient is universally ideal. A reaction sometimes requires a medical investigation. No automatic classification of composition replaces this approach or guarantees a product suitable for all skins.

Useful questions for your next exchange

  • What name of ingredient should I check in my case?
  • Has the current formula changed?
  • Who can help interpret a reaction?
