The scales: one reference point, not the whole picture

Keep the limits of the measurements and also monitor the capabilities of everyday life.

A partial number

Weight alone does not describe health, strength or the relationship to diet. The BMI itself has limitations, in particular because it does not distinguish directly muscle mass and fat mass. Therefore, a measure must be interpreted in its context.

Choosing useful benchmarks

Ask yourself if you can walk more easily, carry a bag or prepare regular meals. If you use a scale, avoid comparing measures taken under very different conditions. Domestic body composition devices should not be treated as diagnostics of medical accuracy.

  • Decide with a professional if weight monitoring helps you.
  • Note a functional objective in addition to a possible figure.
  • Reduce surveillance if it increases anxiety.

An example to adapt to your daily life

You weigh after very different days and each number changes your mood. Ask if this frequency really helps you. You can discuss other landmarks, such as ease in a gesture or the quality of the food organization. If a medical follow-up of the weight is necessary, make its modalities clear. The scale must not become a judge of the day. An isolated figure does not allow a punitive compensation nor a general conclusion on your health.

A broader conversation

Significant or unexplained variations require an assessment. If the number strongly conditions your mood or your diet, ask for appropriate support. The vitality assessment must leave room for concrete progress, not reduce your situation to a category.

Useful questions for your next exchange

  • What other health benchmarks should be considered?
  • How to reduce number-related anxiety?
